Did you know that boys regularly participate in sports (68%) more often than girls (58%) during the age range of 9 to 12 years?
Did you know that, between the ages of 11 and 15 years, 20% of girls drop out of sport, as compared to only 9% of their male counterparts?
Why the gender disparity?
UK Coaching reports that 41% of girls have lost confidence in their sporting ability. Canadian Women & Sport and experts in coaching believe retention and recruitment rates of girls in sport can be significantly improved with the following actions.
- Create an inclusive and safe environment for all girls where they feel emotionally secure, and coaches place high value on feelings of belongingness.
- Build the foundation for a positive and supportive culture. Encourage healthy relationships and quickly address any undesirable behaviours. Focus on increasing self-confidence and self-esteem.
- Redefine girls’ relationship with risk taking. Making mistakes is normal and crucial to progressing and learning.
- Recruit positive female role models (coaches, managers, mothers). See role models. Be role models.
- Focus on equity, fun, and the process of learning, rather than the end results of winning or losing.
ASA wishes to change the narrative and is excited to announce a unique new program of
CrossFHIT Mothers & Daughters
CrossFHIT M&D program will be offered to any female 12+ years, and if so wished, a sister, mother, or aunt. This program is specifically designed for females and is led by Mother & Daughter Sheri & Jessica Hanson.
CrossFHIT is blend of functional movements, strength & conditioning, and core exercises. Whether you are a beginner who wants to get in shape or an experienced athlete looking to take your FHITness to the next level, CrossFHIT is for you. Activities can be scaled back or progressed to meet individual needs.
The CrossFHIT M&D program offers one on-field session and one virtual session each week.
Uniform & Equipment
CrossFHIT M&D participants will receive a FHIT jersey only. Participants must have their own shorts, socks, running shoes, and jacket (if required).
CrossFHIT will provide soccer balls, speed ropes, 4-6 ft long PVC pipes, and lightweight resistance bands made of latex.
CrossFHIT M&D participants must bring their own 4-8 lb medicine ball (soft preferred over hard ball), a set of 5 or 10 lb dumbells, a yoga mat or beach towel, and a water bottle.
CrossFHIT – Field Session (Wednesdays)
On-field sessions start with a dynamic warm up designed to prepare participants for the main workout, to enhance performance, develop physical literacy, and reduce the risk of injuries. 10 min of instruction follows where learners first observe and then perform a new movement using proper biomechanics (technique).
Participants then move on to the main event, or workout of the day (WOD), which involves 15-25 minutes of circuit training using a variety of strength, cardio, and balance/hold positions. The end of the session is reserved for static stretching and welcomed discussion on topics of mental, psychosocial, nutritional and hormonal health and how females can empower performance by optimizing holistic health.
CrossFHIT – Virtual Session (Saturdays)
CrossFHIT virtual sessions will be conducted via Zoom. Content will be participant led and can include points of performance on movement patterns, common faults to avoid, discussions about holistic health topics, and sharing stories, educational information, or resources.
In order to participate in Zoom virtual sessions, participants must download “Zoom Client for Meetings” at https://zoom.us/download. Zoom software prerequisites and “How to Join a Zoom Meeting” at Zoom Prerequisites
