This
year’s edition of the Abbotsford Mariners U13 Boys Y League team is an
exciting combination of speed and athleticism. Combining players from
the neighboring Chilliwack and Pitt Meadows Soccer Associations with
some of Abbotsford’s best homegrown talent, the squad has great
potential. The return of three of last years U13 team members will give
them some valuable experience in Y League play. Cam Frost’s ability and
leadership in goal, Chad Friesen’s composure and grit on defense, and
the fire power of Jake Gosse up-front gives the team a very balanced
line-up.
The team has had a terrific start to the season with 5 wins and 2 ties
and currently sit atop the Super Y League Northwest Division standings.
This past weekend saw them sweep aside the Whitecap’s affiliated Coastal
WFC with a 3-0 victory. Goals from Assis Gill (2) and Julian Froc, as
well as strong defensive play from Manny Deol and Gordan Hall helped
secure a comfortable victory. Sunday morning, just a few short hours
after finishing that game, the team took the field against the other
Whitecaps affiliate, Mountain WFC. The first half started with chances
at both ends, but the game was kept scoreless thanks to shots off the
goalpost by both teams and a penalty miss by Mountain. The second half
became a defensive battle with Mountain having good spells of
possession, but the Mariners getting the better clear cut chances. Both
Jordan Vandrimmelen and Mitchel Walsh worked tirelessly throughout the
game for Abbotsford in the center of midfield. In the end a nil-nil draw
was a fair result in an exciting match that had everything but goals.
This weekend the Abbotsford Mariners host the return matches at 10am
Sat, June 14 against Coastal and Sunday, June 15 against Mountain, both
games to be played at Bateman Park. Come out and cheer on the team as
they continue their pursuit of a National Championship berth in Florida
next fall!
