The U11 Boys Mariners are Off And Running as they begin preparations for
the 2008/9 season.
They
entire squad has worked very hard through the try-out sessions earlier
this month, and got their reward with a come from behind 4-4 draw with a
very strong side from Surrey United on Sunday June 22/08. The much more
structured and game experienced Surrey United side, having played
numerous games together already, came out strong in the first half and
converted 2 very well worked goals. The Mariners, playing their first
ever SUPER 8 match battled hard to keep the Surrey lads in check early
on. The combination of hard work and some great goalkeeping from Harvey
Sidhu keep the score line a respectable 2-0 for the visitors at the
half.
The second half started much like the first did, with Surrey United on
the front foot and our Mariners scrambling to get comfortable with the
new environment of SUPER 8's soccer. Although there were some nice
interchanges of play from the Mariners, the challenge of playing
together for the first time and a little "game day" jitters seemed to be
holding things back. Surrey Untied continued their strong play and
managed to extend their lead early on in the second half to 4-0 with a
couple of close range markers.
Although they were 4 down to a more experienced side, the youngest of
the ASA Mariners' teams didn't let up on their work rate and desire to
compete; and as things have a way of happening in football, they were
just rewarded with a well worked goal shortly there after. Then the
"light" seemed to go on. Those earlier nervous jitters were replaced
with a new found confidence. For the final 15 minutes the Mariners found
their legs, passing qualities and shooting boots we new they possessed
to create a barn burner of a finish. 3 quality goals, 2 rattled
crossbars and some great interplay from the young Mariners produced a
highly entertaining 4-4 draw for both sets of supporters to enjoy.
In light of the EURO08 tournament being played, both teams thought it
would be great to finish off with a penalty shoot-out. Loads of
excitement followed and Surrey United managed to leave Clayburn Middle
with bragging rights for the time being; coming out tops 5-3.
Well done to the entire U11 Mariners Mariners side!
