Having
celebrated Victoria Day on Monday, May 19, the Canadian clubs in United
Soccer Leagues Super Y-League dominated the schedule this past weekend
while most Americans barbequed the extended weekend away.
The majority of the Canadian action took place in the Pacific Northwest
with the Abbotsford Mariners and West Coast Capitals battling the
Vancouver Whitecaps subsidiaries of Surrey, Mountain and Coastal WFC.
Abbotsford bested all aforementioned clubs, going 5-0-2 in boys and
girls action.
The Mariners U13 boys got the club rolling at noon on Saturday, drawing
the Crossfire in their best showing of the weekend – a 3-3 shootout draw
in Abbotsford. The side continued to play well the following day, this
time relying on their defense to win 1-0 over Surrey WFC. The combined
wins put Abbotsford’s U13’s in a 2-0-1 tie for first place in the
Northwest U13 Boys Division.
The club’s U14 boys played almost as well, winning 2-1 on Saturday
against the Crossfire before drawing 2-2 with Surrey on Sunday. The draw
kept both clubs undefeated, with Surrey leading the division with a
record of 3-0-2. Abbotsford is a close second, having accumulated seven
points via two wins and a draw.
Abbotsford’s U16 boys closed out the May 24th action by taking a 2-1
decision from the Crossfire at 4:30 PM PST. The Mariners are alone atop
the early U16 boys’ standings with a record of 2-0-0.
