The U16 Abbotsford Mariner Girls team finished on a strong note defeating New Brunswick 7 – 2 on the final day of the U16 National Club Soccer Championships in Sherwood Park Alberta. The Mariners finished in 7th place and finished with a record of 3 wins and 2 loses. Alberta defeated Ontario 2-1 in the gold medal match, while Quebec defeated Saskatchewan to take the bronze medal.

The Abbotsford Mariner Girls were awarded the “Fair Play Team Award” for the tournament which is presented for sportsmanship on and off the field as voted on by the organizing committee, referees and provincial team representatives. The 5 games in 6 dates proved to be a very demanding test for the U16 Mariner team and all of the players will take away some very fond memories (and many bumps and bruises) from this prestigious National event.

Bill Broadfoot (Head Coach) and Scott Sheldon (Assistant Coach) provided tremendous leadership and support for the team and are to be thanked for their tireless commitment in developing a winning attitude and spirit in this group of young athletes.

The Mariners will now return home and reunite with their U17 Mariner teammates in a hope to try to capture another Provincial title next July.

Thanks for all of your well wishes and support.

Colin Yakashiro (Manager U16 Abbotsford Mariners)
