Game One - U13 Mariners vs Miami Weston

"It was a game both teams felt they could have won" was how coach Ian Knight put it. Both teams had several sterling opportunities to score. In the first half the Mariners were nervous and started tentatively but in the cool of the morning in Tampa (Friday morning was cooler in Tampa than Vancouver due to a cold front that moved in Thursday night). In the first half Miami generated the better of the scoring opportunities as their flashy striker #13 sent a shot wide and another over the bar from inside the box. Abby had its chances. Perhaps the best was from Andy Phillips, awarded a free kick from the top of the 18 yard box. His hard shot glanced off the wall slowing it enough for an easier catch by the keeper.

Phillips had a couple of other good chances early on in the second half before he was subbed for Kree Byrne. After it was Troy Holmes hooking up with Marc Forcier to create seveal shots at the net from just outside the Miami 18 yard box. Cam Frost, the Mariner's keeper, had a strong game catching several high shots earmarked for the top of the goal and by great positioning on several other close in shots by Miami.

In the last seconds of the game Mariner's fans held their collective breath as Miami's flashy #13 found himself on a breakaway from center. Closing in on goal his shot was right at Abby's keeper hitting him in the hands however all was for not as he had been flagged offside at center. The only time left was for Frost to rolled the ball to wing as the ref called the game and the Mariner's had their first point in the bag on a 0 - 0 tie.

Game One - U15 Mariners vs Kalamazoo

The U15 squad didn't fair as well in their opening game dropping a 1 - 0 decision to Kalamazoo. Most Abbotsford observers described it as a flurry against their opponents to scarcely one opportunity for the opposition however that is all it takes in these closely fought games.

Both teams see action on Friday. The U13 Mariners again take to the pitch at 11AM versus Long Island Roughriders and the U15 Mariners kick off at 3PM versus FC Westchester.
