The
U16 Boys Mariners faced off against the North Delta Selects in the 2.30
pm match. These two teams have faced each other three times season with
all three games being decided by a single goal. This match was to prove
no different.
Coming off a disappointing opening match tie, the Mariner boys came out
hard challenging the North Delta team at every opportunity. A tight
checking game was broken wide open in the 40th minute when a throw in
deep in the North Delta end resulted in a tally for the Mariners. Zenow
Renaerts started the play by finding Maxx Sherry off the throw in.
Sherry flicked the ball over the defenders and charging North Delta
keeper to find Travis Reese alone in front. Reese calmly tapped the ball
into the empty net.
The second half began with North Delta pressing for the equalizer. They
were awarded a penalty kick at the 44th minute which was stopped by
Abbotsford keeper Mark Village. Just three minutes later, North Delta
tallied their goal, evening up the match. The game see-sawed with action
at both ends and opportunities for both teams.
In the 65th minute, a long punt from Village found Sherry deep in the
North Delta end. Sherry settled the ball and drove for the net but was
taken down for a penalty kick. Zenow Renaerts confidently drove the ball
into the net for the second Abby goal. A fast and furious finish
entertained the crowd and the local boys hung on for the win. They now
face Kamloops Blaze for their final game of the round robin that will
decide final placings for Sunday.
The U16 Mariner Girls knocked off Victoria United with a convincing 3 -
0 win. The girls have won both their games and face Kelowna in their
third game.
The U15 Boys Mariners were defeated 4 - 1 by Metro Ford Dynamo in the
Richmond Provincial Tournament.
