The U16 Mariners ran into a very talented and deep Calgary Provincial Championship team today and were defeated 5 – 1 in a hard fought game. The Mariners opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes on a miscue by the goalkeeper and Rebecca van Gingel was able to convert the mistake into a Mariner goal. Under sunny skies, there was a strong wind which both team had to contend with throughout the game and the Alberta side went up 3-1 at the half. The Mariners worked tirelessly throughout the game but were unable to capitalize on the few second half chances. The Calgary Colts scored 2 late goals as the Mariners we pressing to get another couple of chances against a very talented and stingy Calgary defense.

The Abbotsford Mariners were a couple of goals shy of qualifying for the medal round and will have a day off on Saturday and will play Sunday and Monday in the seeding pool for positions 5-8. All of the players gave it their all and in the end lost to a deeper squad in Alberta Champs.

The team will be attending the National Championship banquet this evening and will look regroup and finish strong on Sunday and Monday.
